One Year of Beau
A first birthday session full of curiosity, cuddles, and cake.
Beau came into the studio with the kind of quiet curiosity that makes first birthday sessions so special to photograph. At one year old, babies are right in that beautiful in-between stage where they are no longer tiny newborns but not quite big toddlers yet either. Their personalities are just beginning to shine through, and Beau had such a sweet, thoughtful presence from the very beginning.
From the moment the session started, he was taking everything in around him. New surroundings, new sounds, and a camera pointed in his direction didn’t seem to bother him at all. Instead, he sat calmly observing the room, bright eyes moving from one thing to the next as he tried to figure out exactly what this new little adventure was all about.
Every so often he would clap his hands or offer a small smile, clearly enjoying the attention and playful encouragement happening around him. Those tiny expressions of curiosity are some of my favorite moments to capture during first birthday sessions because they feel so honest and perfectly representative of this stage of life.
Turning one is such a meaningful milestone. It marks a full year of growth, learning, and so many “firsts.” First smiles, first giggles, first attempts at crawling or standing, and the very beginning of discovering the world around them.
Sessions like Beau’s are such a beautiful way to pause and celebrate everything that first year has held.
For Beau’s session we kept the set simple and timeless with a wooden rocking horse and a classic white bench. Simple pieces like these allow the focus to stay exactly where it belongs, on the little one and their personality rather than on elaborate decorations.
The rocking horse made for a sweet moment, but Beau decided pretty quickly that it wasn’t going to be his favorite part of the morning. Not long after sitting on it he took a small tumble, which understandably ended his interest in the horse for the rest of the session.
What followed, though, was one of the sweetest moments of the entire morning.
As soon as he felt unsure, Beau reached for his mama and cuddled right into her arms. She scooped him up, comforted him, and within moments he was perfectly content again. Watching those quiet moments between parents and their little ones is always such a reminder of what these sessions are really about.
Even while celebrating independence and big milestones, babies still find their greatest comfort with the people they love most.
After a few cuddles and a moment to reset, Beau was ready to continue the adventure.
As the session went on, his personality really began to shine through. He was wonderfully curious about everything around him, always looking to see what might happen next. Throughout the morning he clapped often, smiled easily, and seemed to truly enjoy the playful energy in the room.
His parents had such a relaxed and easygoing presence, which made the entire session feel calm and natural. They knew exactly how to make Beau laugh and weren’t afraid to be a little silly to keep his attention.
Moments like that are often happening just outside the frame during a session. While the final photograph might show a sweet little expression or a thoughtful look, there is often a whole lot of love, encouragement, and laughter helping create those moments behind the scenes.
Beau responded to that energy beautifully, settling into the session with a happy curiosity that made capturing his personality feel effortless.
Then it was time for the part every baby seems to enjoy most… the cake.
Smash cake sessions are always a little unpredictable. Some little ones approach the cake slowly, poking at the frosting with one tiny finger as they try to decide what exactly has been placed in front of them.
Beau didn’t hesitate much at all.
As soon as the cake was set in front of him he leaned right in, ready to explore. Tiny hands reached out, frosting was quickly discovered, and before long he was happily digging in and enjoying the sweet treat.
The room quickly filled with laughter as Beau embraced the moment, frosting and all. Watching little ones explore cake during a session is always such a fun part of celebrating a first birthday milestone.
It was messy, joyful, and exactly what a first birthday celebration should be. By the end of the session the cake had been completely conquered.
Frosting covered the table, Beau’s tiny hands were full, and he proudly held a fistful of cake as he looked down at the sugary masterpiece he had created.
It was messy, joyful, and exactly what a smash cake session should be.
First birthdays only happen once, and they mark such a beautiful turning point. The tiny newborn days are behind them, and in their place is a curious little explorer beginning to discover the world.
Beau’s session captured so many of those little moments. The curiosity in his eyes, the comfort he found in his mama’s arms, the laughter his parents brought out of him, and of course the cake covered chaos that ended the morning.
These are the memories families hold onto for years to come, and it’s always an honor to preserve them.

If your little one is approaching their first birthday, a smash cake session is such a special way to celebrate this milestone. These sessions are designed to capture your child’s personality, curiosity, and joy during this unforgettable stage.
If you’d love to create memories like this for your own little one, I would love to help tell their story.
